Notes for trip....

Itinerary

  • Meet at Givhen's Ferry State Park at 8:30 am (take-out)
  • Arrange boats with Lowcountry Unfiltered and drive to put-in at Mars Old Field Landing
  • Paddle most of the day, with a side trip into Four Holes Swamp
  • River Distance - 6.13 miles
  • Off river around 4:00 pm
  • Map at bottom of the page

Boats & Gear

  • I've got three touring kayaks reserved with Sunrift Adventures.  These are large, comfortable boats, and track straighter than my little whitewater kayaks.  They also have more space for gear, beer, etc.
  • These are "dry boats" which only means that you're not sitting in water as you do with my whitewater boats.  Even so, plan on getting wet.
  • I'll provide paddles and life vests.
  • I also have dry bags.
  • Other items to bring:
    • water - lots
    • sunscreen - lots
    • lunch & snacks
    • towel and change of clothes for take out
    • cameras
    • waterguns

A couple of other things

  • June 13 is Edisto RiverFest.  Main activities are at Colleton State Park and Givhen's Ferry State Park.  We'll probably encounter lots of other paddlers, in addition to our large group.
  • There will be a current on the river, so paddling shouldn't be too hard.  Many people float this on inner tubes.
  • The Lowcountry Unfiltered group takes things easy.  They like to try out every rope swing, explore any interesting side passage, etc.  They also take pictures - lots of pictures.
  • This stretch of the Edisto has some interesting marl limestone shelves with embedded fossils.  Lots to see and do.
